The Catalysts for Change ESG and Non-Financial Information Reporting and Assurance

Legislation such as the Corporate Sustainability Directive (CSRD) and the increasing number of international guidelines and standards, such as the European Green Deal, the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the SDG’s, the transition of shareholder value to stakeholder value, tax traparency and the required focus on long term value creation are powerful catalysts for change. I.e. the CSRD:

  • extends the scope of the current Non-Financial Information Directive to all large companies and all companies listed on regulated markets (with the exception of listed micro-enterprises);
  • requires the audit (assurance) of reported information (information that must relate to (I) what does justice to 'ESG' has on the company and (ii) information that must consist in what the company does/what effect it has on society/the world);
  • introduces more detailed reporting requirements and an obligation to report according to mandatory EU sustainability reporting standards;
  • requires companies to digitally "tag" the reported information so that it is machine-readable and entered into the European single access point provided for in the European Capital Markets Action Plan. The EU regulations will primarily encourage further disclosure requirements that insist on timely preparation. This involves understanding the requirements, interpreting them for the company's operations and – most importantly – designing and implementing them into systems and processes to deliver data that can be relied upon.
